Pet Insurance 101

Does pet insurance cover medication?

The answer is yes, depending on the type of medication.

When our pets are sick, we’ll do whatever it takes to ensure they feel better as soon as possible. And sometimes, that means using vet-prescribed antibiotics as a solution. But unfortunately, pet medications can be expensive.

That’s why Fetch Pet Insurance covers up to 90% of vet bills, including prescription medications and supplements. But that’s not all we cover — keep reading to find out how we’ll be there for your pet.

Which dog and cat medications are covered by pet insurance?

Fetch covers any medication that a cat or dog’s veterinarian prescribes to treat an approved condition. For example, if your pet is being treated for an infection, we’ll cover up to 90% of the medical bills associated with the necessary medications.

However, Fetch doesn’t cover the cost of any medications prescribed to treat pre-existing conditions, aka any condition that occurred or that your pet has shown clinical symptoms of before signing up for pet insurance, during the waiting period or at the time of your pet’s first veterinary exam

How does pet insurance work?

Getting your pet’s medications (and other necessary treatments!) covered by pet insurance is simple. After signing up for Fetch cat or dog insurance, there’s a 15-day waiting period before any health-related issue is covered. (There’s also a 6-month waiting period for any knee injuries or illness).

After the waiting period, you’re all set to submit your coverage claims. Here’s how it works.

Step one: Visit any licensed vet in the U.S. or Canada.

Step two: Submit a claim on our app or website by taking a photo of your vet documents. We’ll handle it from there.

Step three: Get paid back! You can receive up to 90% of your vet expenses back.

Vet-prescribed medications help to boost our pets’ health. If your vet suggests antibiotics, steroids or supplements to treat an injury or illness — with Fetch, you can get the care your pet needs.

The Dig, Fetch's expert-backed editorial, answers all of the questions you forget to ask your vet or are too embarrassed to ask at the dog park. We help make sure you and your best friend have more good days, but we’re there on bad days, too.
